Leon is unironically the best written champion and has a half decent team minus the glaring flaw that is Charizard. He actually does his job as the champion and gets involved rather being a mystery nigga who you run into once or twice.

Basically a red herring. The closest that got to being real was a background element that Lusamine is making Lillie look more like Nihilego because it embodies everything she wants(except Lillie looks this was before Lusamine even discovers Nihilego). This also gets dropped abruptly by the replacement Necrozma storyline in USUM.

I think he Sw/Sh people on the bottom are certainly more likable, possibly even more flushed out characters, but the fact is, they are all easy AF to beat and are stuck in baby's first Pokemon game, where as the people on the top (particularly cynthia) could present at least some semblance of an actual challenge, therefore making the game more enjoyable, and gameplay is the main thing that matters in a game, not character development.

The antagonists goal is just to impede on the protagonist, they don't necessarily need to be an asshole to do so. The zelda games wouldn't work if ganon was friendly because the plot of the games is that ganon has kidnapped the woman you love and is literally going to destroy the world if you don't stop him. The stakes in pokemon games aren't that high(at least with your rivals who are only trying to beat you in pokemon fights and become the champion instead of you). I don't like the modern "rivals" that heal your party up to full after every route/fight, but I don't think the rival needs to be a dick to be an effective stopgap. Somewhere between Gary/Blue(who was never really that big of an asshole) and Barry would be ideal.
