I stopped playing pokemon in 4th gen (last game was HG/SS) and I really want to pick up where I left off and play 5th gen. I see there is Black and White and Black and White 2.

What game should I start with? Does it matter? Also, what's the best way to play these games these days? Emulator? or is there an official version that's not on NDS i can get? thanks.

If you play these games for plot, start with BW1. If not, then skip to BW2 because it has almost everything BW1 has to offer and then some. Whether you do Black or White doesn't really matter, go with whichever you think has cooler version exclusives.

Oh yeah, and emulator vs console is a bit of a trade-off. Emulator has all the standard QoL you would expect and the capability to do romhacks, but the game can look horrible depending on how its configured. But playing on console would require an actual DS, so yeah. Take your pick.

but i heard the plot is weird in BW2 since it's an actual sequel to BW1 and not just a retrain

So i guess i will start off with BW1 then since the plot kind of matters to me.

The plot does stand on its own legs if you ask me but I understand where you're coming from. But yeah, it's either DS or emulation, it's never been released on eshop. Nintendo is still stingy with Pokemon

2 is a more traditional Pokemon structure in terms of story beats. BW1 is more plot-heavy to the point where it affects some series conventions.
You don't need to play 1 to understand 2, but it helps a lot and gives perspective for what changed in the timeskip it has.

If you value plot, play BW1, then BW2 in that order. Continue with the version you picked for both games, so if you picked Black 1 then play Black 2, or White 1 to White 2. That lines up continuity stuff. If you don't really give a flying fuck about plot, then you can skip straight to BW2, but some stuff in BW2 might seem weird since there's plot elements here that rely on the player knowing what happened in BW1. There is no re-release of these titles yet, so emulation or OG hardware are your options. After you play gen 5 avoid gens 6, 7, and 8.

BW1 = Kanto
BW2 = Johto
You cannot understand BW2's plot and mechanics without playing BW1.

I honestly liked the experience of having no familiar pokemon in black and white. If you'd rather use a mix of all mons though, black and white 2 is probably the way to go

One thing I found interesting about BW was that there was a weird familiarity of some designs to those in KANTOOOO
Like, if you took a written description of certain Kanto mons and then reimagined them, you get Unova lines

They're both great games in their own right and follow different stories. B2W2 are sequels to BW1 but playing BW1 isn't entirely necessary for the understanding of B2W2's story, however it will give more context to smaller things.

Personally I'd say play BW1 first the BW2 after. It'll let you gauge how BW2 improved on things but will also connect you to the region, its characters and how things changed. You won't feel burn out revising the region like you would playing USUM after playing SM because, again, different story and you traverse the region in a mostly completely different way.

Start with BW, please, I beg you. Otherwise, you'll be missing some of the neat stuff hidden in B2W2 you wouldn't notice if you started with the sequels. Not to mention that they are sequels and not some definitive versions of Black and White. Also, BW lack some features you'd miss if you started with B2W2. Either way, not starting with BW is borderline retarded.

I definitely recommend playing them in order. Only things I can think to add that no one else has mentioned is that if you're planning to play all the way to Sword and Shield you can pretty easily send Pokemon from physical Black and White cartridges up to those games. Also Black 2 and White 2 have challenge and easy mode respectively. Not sure how it works with physical copies but it's pretty easy to setup challenge mode on an emulator and that made the game a lot of fun for me.

Interesting. Can you load a save from BW1 and play as the same character with the same mon, or is it a whole new story with a new lead trainer even though it is supposed to be a sequel?
