What the hell is the point of middle stage pokemon? Half of them may as well just to from basic to 3rd stage. The middle stage often seems like complete filler, hardly unique at all to the first and last forns

so that there's variety as you go through the game and so that there's constantly new pokemon to find/strive for as you play and advance. you don't want to be stuck with a basic stage or a single evolution for the entire game. you don't want to evolve your pokemon too early and get bored, and you also don't want to be stuck with a pokemon all game which then evolves at the end after everything's completed.

the real question is why they didn't add more evolution stages in later games.

I don't know why this is such a hard concept for people to understand. Evolving Pokemon is just fun. It's a great visual representation of how your team gets stronger as you progress through the game (way more interesting than just watching a number go up) and gameplay-wise it lets you have a weak, low leveled Pokemon turn into a stronger version of itself early on while still having an even stronger final form to look forward to in the lategame.

The alternative is much worse. If a Pokemon evolves once early, you get bored with it after a while. If a Pokemon evolves once late, you're stuck with the weak base form for a long time. If the Pokemon doesn't evolve at all, that's the worst possible choice. Once you catch it, it's already as strong as it can be. Why train it? It's just box filler.

It’s because they bridge the gap between the beginning of the game and the midgame. Imagine fighting a fifth gym per say with either a solosis or a reuniclus, one is too weak and would get KO’d immediately and the other is too strong and could potentially sweep an entire team. Sure they may not be great in competitive or the post game but they certainly contribute to what little balance the main story based battles in Pokémon games have.

It mostly worked in Gen 5 itself because you were only catching most of those Pokémon right before they were ready to evolve anyway.
The issue is that they then showed up in later games in earlier areas without having their evolution requirements changed.
