This. A lot of people conveniently gloss over how refreshing it was to get just a little bit of Kanto after not having it for 8 years prior.
The KANTOOOO memes literally didn't even start until Alola. Back then, it made sense to reference Kanto a little bit because Kalos WAS the new Kanto.

A lot of designs are objectively "incomplete" on purpose so they can be "finished" with their Gigantamax, too, it's really going to show and bite them in the ass when they come back in a game without Maxing.

Mega Evolution was blatantly a lazy gimmick they slapped in purely just to shill old Pokemon rather than have any sort of real gameplay purpose. You can tell by the fact that gen 7 and 8 actually had some of the new Pokemon get signature versions of the gimmick and the gimmick being used through the entire game instead of just 2 or 3 trainers. Z-moves and Dynamax are far more well thought out than Megashit.

I don't think they ever intended for Kalos starters to get megas, if they did they would've been shoved into SM like the rest of scrapped Z content. It's weird but as OP pointed out Kalos mons as a whole got fucked out of getting megas

By that logic we should've gotten a Jhoto starter in Gen 7 or a Hoenn starter in Gen 8.
You aren't owed "more Kanto", nostalgia pandering is a cheap lifesaver that only a franchise with bad numbers should understandably resort to. Pokemon has no business pulling it.

Not OP but the one that comes straight to mind is coalossal. The base form looks pretty shit but the g-max is very imposing and the furnace aesthetic just works pretty well. Toxtricity looks fine enough i suppose but the g-max is nicer, same goes for both urshifus. Grimmsnarl is pretty good in base form, and the g-max makes it only slightly better. Sandaconda is very mediocre without the g-max, and even with it it's only decent.
