Played through Sword just once and haven’t touched it since the DLC.

How does the DLC work? If I start a new game should I leave a slot open for the bear legendary? Can I experience the DLC’s during the main story or are they both unlocked post-game?

you can do both before the first gym but like half the crown tundra is locked until you get the surf bike and you can't catch calyrex at all until you beat leon

You can do the Isle of Armor before first gym. But you'll get the Exp Charm that will turn the game to super easy mode.

As >>45487577 said, the Crown Tundra is accessible before first gym too but everything is at lvl 70.

Most of IoA is designed to hapoen at the same time as the main game, ideally between gym 1 and 2. Then there is a post-game exclusive mission on the Isle, and all of CT is meant to be post-game.

A full ordered list is pretty much:
> Start game
> After your first visit to Motostoke, go to the Isle
> Play until you get Kubfu
> Go back to the mainland until you become Champion
> Go to the Isle, evolve Kubfu, help Hau research Urshifu so you can Gigantamax it
> Fight with Mustard is basically the end of the Isle
>Go to the Tundra, follow Peony and talk to Sonia to get your 3 main quests and 1 side quest
>In any order: Calyrex's quest, Galarian Bird quest, Regi quest
