Unless it's like something that has been in their web since forever or something like that, that's bullshit.
A random sentence in a random recent interview isn't going to do jack shit for them, they have no reason to say that out of court and even if they did they'd have to prove that's the case.
In all likelihood, it was just Masuda trying to make themselves appealing by implying that their designers are so good, inspired and pure that they've managed this without ever getting any kind of idea from external sources.
But hey, maybe it's true and that's why we don't have a dolphin pokemon yet.
