I do think there should be a requirement to have the right pokemon that can do a certain thing.
If I had my way most or all pokemon would have one or two special out of battle abilities so, for example, if you have to get over a ravine, you could get a talonflame to fly you over, you could get an ariados to make you a web bridge, etc. Each pokemon could have their own advantages that could come in useful in different circumstances. In that sense yes, LGPE started a good path, but I’d like to see them do it without magical superpowers pikachu/eevee
