fun fact, there are two pokemon in ruby that use a moon stone to evolve, skitty and jigglypuff, but only one moon stone
they made data for all pokemon made up until those games even if they werent included within the actual game, which makes me wonder if the addition of jigglypuff was a last minute pokedex padding decision which could explain the oversight
but then again there was only one moonstone in emerald too so they missed their chance to fix that then sooo

Replaying fire red for the 1st time in 10 years, I'm actually enjoying it. Trying to get as many of the original 150 plus what ever gen 2 mons where added post game. Looking at the originals as an adult I'm starting to thing people are blinded by nostalgia when tey say the designs went to shit in the new games. Granted I havnt played the anything after soul silver, but I've seen new ones here and there. Yeah i can agree the new starters tend to be pretty meh, but I'm realizing most gen 1 mons are just noral animals more or less. rats, birds, turtles, fish some plants. A few dragons and a fossil or two. There cool, I like the designs but if I wasnt big into pokemon as a kid, like i never heard of it and just picked it up now I dont know if i'd think kanto was all that special.
also sucks that I need to tade to get a few evolutions. I get it from a marketing perspective- sell 2 games yadda yadda but i dont have a copy of leaf green and i thnk some little shit stole my gba wire along with some of my games years ago. I'm still enjoying the fuck out of it, just trying to get that other stone so i can get mewtwo. And this go around i didnt waste my master ball on a fucking snorlax

Absolutely brilliant, the communication between the games fascinated me. Mixing records might not sounds like much but getting to see another player's secret base in your world map and unlocking new swarms was mind blowing back then. Contests were a new and exciting way to play with your collection of Pokemon and the return of the Battle Tower was exciting and offered better rewards than just more vitamins like in Crystal. I loved the Trainer Stars system, it's such a fun and inventive way to incentivize completing the game, it's a shame that they fumbled the implementation in FireRed/LeafGreen. The introduction of berry farming was so cool too, I loved taking care of my berry plants to give myself the edge in battles and giving me more useful resources that I could use to make Pokeblocks and just completely replacing Ether items. A plethora of memorable designs were introduced to the series, the golems, the titans, the starters, the eon duo etc. A lot of people argue that these games were a step down from GSC but I disagree wholeheartedly, I thought they were marvelous sequels.

Emerald is one of the top three games of Pokémon. You could feel the amount of work they put into that game emanating from the green fucking cartridge. Sure they didn’t put in deoxys or jirachi but they still did ALOT of effort into the game. Lord have mercy

Sapphire WAS indeed the first game in actuality, Pokemon AGB logo was only blue for a very long time and the source code puts SAPPHIRE version defines before RUBY.

gastrodons gimmick is that there are two designs for either side of mt coronet in sinnoh, but hoenn also has a east/west divide at route 118 so maybe that has something to do with its ingame location but idk

Any other losers here who didn't have friends with link cables as a kid?
Trading for the first time in Gen III a year or two back and actually being able to use my own Kantomons and trade evos in Hoenn was utterly surreal, I remember not really knowing where to get Huntail and Gorebyss for years because they really didn't line up with the look of Clamperl

My friends had moved on from pokemon when gen 3 rolled in. I got some trades done and dex fillers found in summer camp. I had all of the hoenn dex seen (sans mythicals), but not caught, so I was pretty upset when I found out I still needed to catch like 80 more pokemon.

Translation took the context away from the game. There was a community in japan that was torn by two groups of people. One that wanted to artificially expand land into the ocean for economic purposes, and another that wished to preserve their environment but at the cost of progress. Japan has a long history of environmental controversial. In the states, especially mainland, we lose that context and that makes the conflict gen 3 presents less interesting.

You know, I kinda wish that for each legendary in games onward, the teams use unique locations. Like magma's Lilycove base becomes Mt.Chimney and so on. Encounters not happening at exactly the same time. Problem is Gamefreak would never care about that kind of writing.
