Gen 4 was the first one that was completely on its own, which is weird considering how on paper Hoenn is incredibly disconnected to the older games and how Sinnoh is connected so strongly to the first few games on paper.
Maybe it's my memories of the Orange Islands stuff and Hoenn feels like a vacation but Sinnoh just never went home.
Regardless, I think there's a clear divide between gens 2 and 3, and 3 and 4. You could probably put one between 5 and 6 but they've got a more similar feel than I expected.
