Gen 5 sold less because it was released at the very end of the DS' life. 3DS released just a few months after BW's Japanese release and its NA release was AFTER the 3DS launch, people were scratching their heads over this shit being on DS and even more so when BW2 was on the DS.

The cycle is literally: X gen sells bad, next one sells good, next bad, next good on repeat mode. They didn't have to try for gen 8 because it was the gen that was supossed to sell really good. So they got away with cutting a lot of stuff out, less work. And it did sell like hotcakes.

SM sold better than XY, though. The only reason ORAS sold more than USUM was because ORAS had a gap year with no new releases to kneecap its sales. Also the whole thing about USUM releasing after the Switch launched.

I had to go double check the sales, I called it wrong, but XY only beat it slightly. SM was selling faster initially, but I guess it slowed when people realized how bad it was.

People forget that a massive earthquake hit Japan during gen 5 and I imagine that does way more to explain gen 6's pivot to kanto pandering than BW itself. That incident knocked a lot of franchises off course.

It's baffling, honestly. I like gen 4 the most because it's very comfy and the slower pace in the overworld really makes it feel like an adventure, even if the battling should be faster. Nintendo themselves weren't affected too badly but a much weaker economy means less people willing to spend money on merch and junk, which is Pokemon's primary moneymaker, not the games themselves. Anyone using game sales to argue anything about the franchise as a whole is looking at the wrong numbers
With that in mind, it's not to hard imagine TPC wanting to bank on nostalgia to push people into buying merch again. Even in the ashnime Kanto pandering started creeping in its last couple years with Iris getting a Dragonite and Charizard returning
