This. In Japan Sandshrew is called Sando (3 degrees), so the old name didn't make sense.

Because in-universe, the species is named Sandslash because the first discovered variety of the species was named for slashing and behind found in sand.

Then they found other variants that aren’t different enough to be a new species so they keep the same name
