Gen II had a bunch of those weird items that a Pokemon traded from Gen I would be holding such as Brick Piece. Many of those items never made a comeback and were in fact completely pointless as even the money you got from selling them was essentially nothing.

I think it showcased the differences between Lysandre and Xerosic very well. Lysandre was legitimately giving the choice to you whether to shoot the ultimate weapon or not. Xerosic on the other hand was the one who said "fuck you, we're doing it anyway" even if you pressed the correct button. He was the real villain of the game whereas Lysandre was some weird idealist. This is further emphasized by the fact that Xerosic returns as the villain in the post-game.
