There was an interview of some of the folks who worked on Gen 1 localization, and the one overseeing the project was extremely adamant on naming it his suggestion, Mr. Mime, just to get it out of the way, despite the others being concerned should Pokemon introduce genders in the future. The boss thought Pokemon wouldn't warrant a sequel, so he didn't bat an eye at the possibility.
