X and Y is a really mediocre game. The move to 3D wasn't all that bad, and the game had an excellent wi-fi scene, but the storyline suffered greatly, and people were understandably critical about things like characters, mega evolution, and the path you had to take through Kalos.
Sun and Moon were strong on characters and had a good story. It was a step up, basically. But Ultra Beasts were divisive, many people found the way that the game tries to be friendly to be obnoxiously hand-holdy, and anyone who was concerned about whether mega evolution is bad for the franchise now had Z-Moves to worry about as well. And also, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are basically a slap in the face.
The 3D era had a lot of activity, but was ultimately plagued with issues that really divided the more hardcore fans of the franchise.
