Even though his town was literally a hallway I appreciate that he was the only Gym with a unique arena and music (even with the conspicuous lack of lyrics), but I was a little disappointed that he wasn't lying about not being able to Dynamax

I figured I was forgetting someone in that list. The Hoenn Elite Four is a little on the bland side, but Sidney really takes the cake for having fuck-all to his name. The most memorable thing about him is how annoying it is that you probably won't beat him without taking any damage just because his Shiftry uses Fake Out.

To be honest, I find most leaders and E4 in the series to be completely bland, with their design and maybe one very basic personality trait making them appealing to some guy.

I like these reasons better. My assumption was that besides Grimmsnarl who used as Marnie's ace, there wasn't an available dark type gigantamax unique for him to use as a late game gym leader. Yes they could have used Grimmsnarl again but it was already set to belong to Marnie during the championships and might have devalued the hype of the battle. it was only until the Island of Armor DLC another dark type Gigantamax was introduced. So instead they went the easy way and made a story explaining why and gave him obstagoon instead. That or obstagoon was planed to have a gigantamax but didn't make the final cut.

Or at least special dialogue about it, Peony even says the thing reminds him of the punks in Spikemuth and their logo is the thing's head, I would lave liked to show it to him and give us some history about it

But every gym leader used Gigantamax pokemon after Milo, and even Nessa uses one in the rematch. Milo has the excuse of being the first gym you fight to at lest introduce basic Dynamax. Though it is weird they didn't give him one via rematches.
