Mega Mewtwo made headlines when it was first revealed. There was speculation about it being Mewthree, everyone and their mother was talking about it. Yes, it was leaked before the term "mega evolution" was officially revealed, but the corocoro scans with the first batch of megas came shortly after.
There isn't a single person that was a fan of the franchise that time that didn't know about it. Mega Mewtwo Y literally made headlines on normie sites and was touted as the last big bang for Unova going into Kalos.

I know personally I sort of just lost interest with the franchise and took a break around the start of gen until nearing the tail end of gen 6. (started getting back in about a year before gen 7 was announced)

If GF really does switch out battle mechanics every gen then megas really lucked out since they had the time to really establish themselves within the franchise that other mechanics like dynamax won't

Potential isn't good enough. Megas as a concept were extremely underdeveloped and shit.
The issue is that people seem to think it's a gimmick when it really isn't. Despite the former they're still more fleshed out than the other supposed "regional gimmicks" that always conveniently exclude things like Wonder Launcher and fusion moves from other gens.
Everything that came after ORAS is a straight downgrade, LGPE ironically is the only thing that comes close to decent. We can only hope Let's Go Sinnoh does DP justice with the open world treatment.

But this is wrong, there was a reference a tourist made to a Power Spot but Dynamax was never seen in Alola at all.
Mega Evolution was literally performed in Unova first and foremost, it has nothing to do with it being while the Unova games were out, they could have done the reveal literally anywhere.

Mega Evolution was never touted as a Kalos-only feature, there was quite literally no retcon required for them to be in ORAS like some people of that vocal minority claim.
Z-Moves and Dynamax are different, not only do they only function in their respective regions, they're meant to be dropped for the sake of keeping their regions "unique".
Even if you only consider strictly the games, Megas are still seen in Kalos, Hoenn, Alola, Kanto, and Johto by extension.
That's 4/8 at least and 6/8 regions when taking the other ones with a grain of salt.
Mega Evolution =/= Dynamax/Z-Moves

Megas were barely a selling point of XY and continue to be relevant today despite Dynamax and Z-Moves existing.
The real question is how can you consider Mega Evolutions a gimmick? They have actual lore and a reason for existing that implements itself nicely into every pre Gen 7 region.

I never watched the Genesect movie, unironically who the fuck sits through Pokemon movies past age 13? The first I remember seeing Mega Mewtwo was on this board when there was a sticky of a Mega Mewtwo screenshot with "Childhood ruined" or something similar to that.
