No one talks about it but ground was a weird type in gen 1, they really like using it as a random secondary type almost the same way flying was. The only ground types that are actually like literal ground pokemon are Diglet and Sandshrew, the rest could just be single type rock/poison or just normal.

Because ground is a weird type that doesn't make any sense. The only ground type that's not organic is baltoy/claydol and golurk, everything else that makes sense is a burrowing or desert creature, a muddy horse or part rock.
The rest are ground because fuck you.
