Can we have a thread dedicated to discussing romhacks and fangames? Not like /rheg/ where the focus is development but the act of actually playing them.

I started playing Blazing Emerald a day ago, and it’s actually looking pretty good. Apparently Clefable is a Dark type in this game, so that’s something. There’s also regional variants, I just got a Water/Electric Tentacool.

I'm currently having fun like a kid playing Silver 97 reforged and yesterday I became the Nihon champion but here's my question, what do I need to do in order to spawn Lugia and progress with the post game? I've already caught Ho-oh like in vanilla Gold 97 just in case.

It's a crystal hack so you can play as either genders, with a full color region and some expanded maps, you can use the skateboard, more content added to the postgame, Lugia is back in both Gold and Silver and both versions have different sprites just like in the final release.

Doing a regular run of Renegade Platinum, about to take a swing at Roark with this team. Gonna try and stick with these guys until at least Gardenia; was really hard deciding on who I wanted to keep and who to bench since RP is incredibly generous with choices at the start.

Fair enough. Clefable is just a mixed attacker, Raichu is slow and bulky and Eevee is just more usable until you eventually evolve it. I’m only really using Clefable because I was interested in how a Dark type Clefable would do but I can’t even have that

It just expands it a little. For the most part it’s some of the later gen Pokémon. There are some regional variants though and some evolutions like Zamgoose and Seviper

As in they have moves and abilities they're usually not supposed to have, like Blaziken learning Ice Punch. The clean files just remove these changes so the game plays closer to the originals, essentially making a hard mode that's more accurate to the original game.

Oh, just as a heads up, the game is translated from German as the the hack is originally German, so you’ll find a few weird terms. No one ever says “trainer”, they say “coach”. And I think one NPC says Scizor’s German name instead of its English one

Pretty much everything in the game goes to level 100 and the League + Kanto and Red are all well above level 100.
It's still nuzlocke-able, it's just very very hard.

Any games with SWSH Pokemon and maybe some difficulty to it? Or at least cool retypings/regionals/deltas?
I know about Radical Red and have been playing it but the difficulty basically requiring me to EV train and nature hunt and shit kinda detracts a bit. Insurgence had a fun difficulty where I didn't have to grind shit out entirely but still needed to adapt/change my team a bit/come up with strategies. I want some SMT-tier difficulty, I guess. But I also wanna use SWSH mons because I don't have those games and I'd trade difficulty for a comfy adventure.

Beat Roark no problem, poor guy couldn't handle Sidney at all. Made my way to Valley Windworks trying to catch some new mons when I found this guy. I was actually aiming for a Voltorb in particular since I've never used one before and the nature is just a cherry on top. Sadly had to bench Athena(Aggron's my favorite Pokemon), but I've already used Aggron pretty much anytime I could in other games, so it's about time I let some other mons shine for once.

Not really, because different people want different things from romhacks or fangames.
You want new mons? Check out Sage ('s last demo), Clover, maybe Insurgence for the Delta Pokemon.
You want the canon games but a little more difficult? Start with Drayano and go from there into Radical Red or whatever.
You want a big story? You're shit out of luck then because there hasn't been a story-focused fangame that isn't a pile of shit.

I'm having a blast. When I'm not grinding on wild Pokemon that all know Toxic+Explosion, I'm downloading hacking tools to view learnsets since the creator didn't bother writing them down.

DESU though it's been easier than I expected since Bugsy.
It's even nice enough to give me a shiny Charizard with a good moveset from an egg.

I’d also suggest Eclipse and Gaia. Eclipse only has 4 gyms and Gaia doesn’t have a postgame yet. Vega and Procyon/Deneb are also good but Procyon and Deneb are only in Japanese and only go up to the 5th gym

The only thing I don't like about these sprites is Aipom being its final colours and Leafeon not being all green like in the beta. Other than that, these are awesome, and whoever made them did an amazing job.

You can catch Pokemon with Hidden Abilities. Just catch a regular one first, and after a few DexNav encounters (like 20-30 I believe, you don't have to battle them, just encounter and run) HA Pokemon will start to appear.
It can take a while to roll a Pokemon with HA AND good IVs though. Your best bet is wait until you get to Saffron, there's an NPC there that can change your Pokemon to HA with a bottlecap. You get them by Thief-ing Palossand. Use a Pokemon with Frisk to increase the odds of them holding it.

If you're ok with grinding Audinos every once in a while to build up new members, you can get away with counter-teaming all the way until the League.

yes it can be a bit edgy at times and there are some specific points the fanfiction went way overboard, but the overall plot is great. The game can be pretty challenging on hard mode as well.

Insurgence's plot is literal dogshit with dialogue that's a 12 year old redditor's wet dream and a plot that makes the absolute dumbest fucking turns. Seriously fucking REBORN has more coherent plot, characters, and believable dialogue - the worst you get in Reborn is a tranny educating you on pronouns or someone killing themselves, not a grown adult man unironically saying "I'm the antihero, Persephone. The chaotic good character. I'll do whatever I need to to save the world." or Deoxys DNA becoming a Deoxys virus that infects your rival (????????).
And it also does descend into stereotypical save the world shit, in the absolutely worst way possible, by the 'true villains' coming out at the end of the game with zero buildup prior with no connection to anything else.

It’s mostly an enhancement hack with an expanded pokedex including a bunch of regional variants. For example there’s a Dark/Water type Dewgong, a Ground/Flying Dodrio and a Fairy type Goomy(just Goomy). It’s pretty neat.

It's difficult, but not the tedious nor bullshit "difficult" that the romhack community seems to wank over i.e. not awful like radical red or the drayno shit is. Decent enough dex to make the region feel different and there are just enough little changes to make the whole thing enjoyable.

There's a few 'hoenn' variants of pokemon. Venonat and tentacool lines are top tier. The visual overhaul is nice and the character dialogue sprites are beautiful and the tiny bit of trainer customization is cool.

I'm able to use mons I actually like and am still scraping by. EV training is, while obviously helpful, not necessary and I've even done without having to hunt good natures. Though I would recommend doing so.

Overall it's one of the best romhacks I've played. Only change I dislike is they replaced the OG music with later gen stuff. Emerald has some of the best music of all the games, no idea why you would remove it. At least give us the ability to toggle it.

Blazing Emerald is good, but has a couple fakemon hoenn variants. Really recommend though.

Something more vanilla? Altered Emerald and Fire Red Omega basically just add slight improvements to the original games and allow you to catch all 386 available pokemon in game.

Pokemon Glazed is a whole new region set in the gen 3 style with a mix of mons from gen 1-6.

Liquid Crystal is a remake of crystal in the gen 3 engine, with some small changes.

Oh and while not a romhack, it's a standalone game, Pokemon Island is incredibly unique. It's basically what would happen if the entire game is built around the battle frontier. You start on an island with a ton of battle facilities and access to a few routes/areas. You get a starter and build a team from the connected areas, making your way through the facilities which unlocks more routes and harder facilities, with heaps of customization and side stuff. Very well done and a very different take on Pokemon.

when looking for already patched roms I mostly find old versions, so I avoid that

Meh. I'm playing emerald enhanced since I thought some of it sounded interesting and it would make a good nuzlocke but I have had to abandon that. It is difficult, and there are good ideas, but the open world thing turns it into a pain in the ass to nuzlocke properly unless I want a team of shitmons because of the level scaling. I fought Roxanne and she has choice band aerodactyl with earthquake and fly (which is a 1 turn move now). Acrobatics flying gem archeon. What I assume is eviolite lilieep with recover. Meanwhile I am sitting here with a team of 2nd stage evo and mainly under 60 bp moves save for beldum.

That's not the kind of balance I like to see myself. I don't care if a game is hard, but I don't see how a nuzlocke is really viable at that point. Not feeling it.

As best I can explain it, Fire Red is essentially Emerald, but with a lot of the grunt work already done in terms of scrubbing it clean and making it "generic". It's kinda like Emerald, remade into a more generic romhack engine, that is then used to generate Kanto, if that makes sense at all, meaning things are less tightly bound and neatly packed.
You COULD start with Emerald, but at the point where you're tearing it all down to start over anyways, you're just giving yourself more work to end up at essentially the starting place with Fire Red.

From there, DS emulators/software tends to be a bit more messy than GBA, so at the point where you're considering something as extensive as a full rebuild hack of a gen 4/5 game, you're better off doing it in RPGmaker or something; in either event, it's more taxing, so it is less often done, and tends to require more collaborators, which then starts to get messy for different reasons.

You can get Beldum, alongside the other pseudo legends and some misc shit, at the Celadon City Game Corner after you beat Erika. It costs 100k, or 200k if you want a shiny.
I'm pretty sure the pseudo legends appear randomly in those early game eggs. I got a Gible from the one in Pewter.

IIRC, Gaia is intentionally not a difficulty hack but a story based one. It's apparently not too off from a regular Pokemon game when it comes to a challenge.

Any way I can edit pokemons in my ROM? I've just spent 3 hours hunting for a good larvesta in BB2 and the best one I found has an estimated 5 Sp. At. IV.. I tried action replay codes but the IV modifying ones don't seem to work... I'm tired

I think I'll try the PKhex.
I don't mind spending time grinding levels but having to hunt rare pokemon that don't end up sucking balls is hurting too much

Google how to enable PKhax. PKhex only allows 'legal' Pokemon so if you're dealing with something that had it's stats/abilities changed, it will fuck things up

Currently playing Outlaw. It's a nice pallet cleanser since I gave up on Kanlara.

I mean, I can't say I'm a fan of 1 to 5 hours of grinding between gyms, but I can handle that. It was reasonable till I hit the champion.

It was a "sequel" to Shadows of Almia but really had little to nothing to do with it other than Darkrai.

The main thing that sets it apart was that it tried to get a lot of 5th gen things to fit into a 3rd gen game. There were some graphical glitches (just look at the badges on the trainer card for an example), but it's ambitious, and I really do appreciate the work it took to insert a new menu design into the game. It's not a long game, and the difficulty is about on par with an official 3rd gen game. My main complaint was that he forgot to let Drifblim learn Fly and I had to replace it halfway into the game.
