You guys got me, I will admit I haven't played fully through original G/S/C (but I am semi playing through Crystal currently, just beat Jasmine) and I only beat Soul Silver once, I just didn't remember Karen having a Vileplume. To be fair, that anon was "fixing" the teams, and Karen is a Dark type trainer, so my point still stands, why does she have a Vileplume? The only argument I can think is that it had a "Dark" card in the TCG around the time G/S/C were released, but that is a little ridiculous.

It's not 'some kind of rule'. It's just making their teams better. Johto has, bar none, the worst Gyms of any Pokemon game, besides maybe XY (and RS/ORAS but Emerald fixed them at least). And if you're giving them new Pokemon, why NOT give them Johto Pokemon. They're already barely seen in the games.

Because there weren't enough Dark Pokemon, so they just gave her a Gengar and Vileplume instead. They both work well against Fighting types though, so it works. Giving Gym Leaders one or two off-type Pokemon to cover weaknesses makes for better looking teams

They are newly discovered from perspective of someone who only been to Kanto, by us. If you want to say that it doesn't make sense in lore, then you agree that gen 2 Pokemon aren't more Johto then most gen 1 Pokemon.

Oh, you mean in GSC? Well, only Koga had non-poison bugs. Besides that, Karen is the only one who didn't had a Pokémon fitting her theme. (And Koga's Pokémon fitted his theme: Ferrothorn used toxic and was an annoying lead)

You are suggestion giving an early-mid game gym leader a fucking box legendary, while saying it's the same as giving that same trainer a mon that isn't available without trade. Those are not the same thing and anyone with a brain would say giving him giratina would be retarded where as giving him spiritomb wouldn't immediately break the game but rather an arbitrary "pattern" that serves no purpose.

initial match is only pokemon available to trainers in the region, and scaled to the number of badges they have (sort of. its not actually scaled in the code because gamefreak can't code or balance, but as long as you're getting badges in intended order they match up, meaning that is the devs intention to convey.

Steven Stone? Skarmory is not related to geology/archeology. Everything else is either a resurrected fossil, a living rock or artifact, or a living excavation machine.

Iris's champion team, even if you consider lapras as on theme for dragons, archeops very much is not.

Alder only has a Native American theme going for half his team.

Diantha has a similar issue with "pretty"

In GSC only one of those postgame gyms goes over Level 50. Janine's Pokémon are in the 30s.
The remakes help a little but the endgame is still like Level 60 after 16 gyms. Kanto wasn't designed as linear progression, it's just a postgame bonus sandbox.

honestly, slugma should have been added somewhere very early into the game

slugma is pretty crappy and it's only redeeming feature is that it learns decent moves early on (ember and rock throw giving is fire/rock coverage at a low level), aside from that it is blatantly inferior to every other fire type in the game

now this advantage is negated entirely by the fact you only get access to slugma in fucking kanto

at least people might actually use houndoom because it's got a unique typing and stats to back it up, but nobody used slugma/magcargo for anything in gen 2

The only way to get slugma early is to talk to Primo (NPC in the Violet City pokémon center) and enter a password (for which you need a special website to generate the password) to get a slugma egg
