The QoL additions carry the game. Literally the first game in the series I actually enjoy playing online because I can build Pokemon how I want them within seconds.

It was a fun casual pokemon experience, it felt like it had much better flow than gen 7 and maybe gen 6 too, the wild area is a nice addition, a lot of the QoL updates/additions are really great, and Dynamax is the best addition to VGC in a while.

there's lots of small QOL stuff i could say but i think one of the big ones for me was actually making the gym leaders characters and making your gym challenge feel like an actual thing as opposed to blundering across a region randomly ruining gym leaders days. Also even if Hop is annoying i find the rest of the cast really endearing and likable

Some of the QOL aspect (like mints and exp candies) are the only really redeeming factor of these games but honestly they were inevitable regardless so its not even something I can really credit to SWSH and even then the QOL aspects is held back by how crap the online aspects themselves with how slow the Ycomm is with updating for raids, the removal of the vs recorder for recording battles or the abysmal code system where they removed the ability to access a friends list (to interact with friends directly instead of the unreliable code system and you know the code system is shit when GF had to make it into an 8 digit from the original 4 digit code system) which let you directly interact with friends for battles and trades which also existed in some capacity in gen fucking 4.

QoL is the only thing that somewhat salvages these games, and I'm hoping that most of these QoL improvements in regards to the competitive scene will be kept. That said, they are easily the worst mainline games so far and I think no one can defend the sheer emptiness of Galar, the lack of graphic polishment and the absence of post-game content outside of the usual Battle Tower clone which has been made even smaller in these games.
