I seriously doubt anyone that looks back on gens 1-4 actually have any difficulty playing them back now, the only reason they ever felt hard is because you probably played them when you were a child.
I'm playing through Ultra sun for the first time right now, currently on the third island. I have yet to face a single difficult battle and have not overleveled at all. The only "difficult" part of the game that I've ever heard mentioned is the ultra necrozma fight but one difficult fight in the game isn't very impressive or even different from most other gens.
I'm not trying to disparage pokemon, I don't think the intention of the games was ever to be hard. The games exist to show you a cool region/experience and let you catch new bros. I think this is a way bigger failing point of newer gens than anything directly related to gameplay.
