The general consensus does seem to be that Ruby and Sapphire stand on their own, while Diamond and Pearl had some fairly deep design flaws (region a bit plain, very limited dex with new Pokemon introduced that are for some reason unobtainable until the post-game) that were addressed within Platinum.
Probably reading too much into it but it's almost like GF knew DP were basically betas for Platinum. I always thought that the extended versions (Emerald/Platinum/Ultras) were just cheap double dip DLC. Now I'm thinking the company is just so poorly managed that they sometimes have to release the games in two stages to actually get them out on time, and just sell the "and now we actually managed to finish it" version a year or two later when they've actually managed to finish it.
An entire business strategy centered around the fact a sub-mediocre dev studio has a great IP and very little skill in the way of making a good game.
If GF had any sense, they'd start dishing out the IP to more competent devs to play with. They could spend a little more time putting together "mainline" games designed for marketing to children while another studio develops games with stories and more radical changes to the core formula for fans who still want the classic Pokemon RPG experience but have done the 8 badge run one to many times.
