Johto's Kanto is a literal boss rush with nothing inbetween but weak trainers and the same shitmon from the other region. There's nothing to do but collect the other badges. You can complete the whole region in at most an hour and a half. That's boring as hell.

Hoenn had more stuff to do than the first 2 regions combined. Going back to Kanto after that was a big snoozefest, the sevii islands were only interesting because they were a new thing and brought mechanics like breeding to a Kanto game but once Emerald came out there was no reason to deal with any of that shit. During this time, everyone forgot Johto existed until the remakes came out at the end of that decade.

The speedrun for Hoenn is shorter than the speedrun for Kanto, and the speedrun for Johto+Kanto is almost double than both (I am talking about gameboy, gameboy color and gameboy advance, so similar speeds overall, not slugfests like the 3DS)

This is false from a design point of view (games weren't intended to have Kanto as postgame, so they have normal length)

and from a factual point of view (beating Johto alone in a speedrun takes the same as beating Kanto or Hoenn)

But there's an objective amount of time (the world record speedrun), and it shows Objectively it isn't any shorter than Kanto and Hoenn.
