The models are extremely nostalgic, but I remember kids in my class insisting that these "types of cards" are guaranteed fake. It was super-weird to see elements of the game rendered in 3D, when no other medium did it.

And? The rare cards are supposed to look special and rare. That Umbreon picture is basic as fuck. If you like it so much buy a fucking poster of it or something. The rare cards are better when they look special. That Alakazam card might look "soulless" but you pull that shit and see the glowing outline on Alakazam and it's like you struck gold. That's why these cards are designed like they are. They are not designed to look pretty.

It has more players than VGC but as a game its weaker
Unlike other TCGs there's very little disruption so battles are quite a bit more flowchart-y. Furthermore the fact that decks have to focus on 1 or 2 types at a time makes the game more matchup-focused than even the video games
The only thing it really has going for it is that the online client is the best out of the TCGs and unlike the video games collecting has actual value since you can't just hack shit in

Tag memes started this downfall though. SM-LOT was a genuinely beautiful format with shit like shedinja/oranguru being a fun control deck, white kyurem/arceus prism being a strong one prize deck, and alolan ninetales gx allowing 3 different stage 2’s in a deck being viable. This all got destroyed with team up with tagshit and zapdos. It all came back to big basics where nothing else could compete besides zoroark and malamar. Each subsequent set furthered this and then adp was the nail in the coffin. Now we’re with V and vmaxes which are powercreeped and awful. FUCK TAG TEAMS (except for their art)

Not even the worst part. That GX move can be used while you're setting up, so it's more like 180, and it makes every non-GX/V shitter that gets oneshotted by it a 2 prizer.
