>>45578836Calyrex looks awful if you imagine it as being a stereotypical kingly pokemon that's meant to be the ruler of the entire region.
In the context of the story, though, Calyrex is more like an ancient fairy king who has been forgotten to time. He's far past his prime, he's lost almost all of his power (fittingly reflected by him being laughably weak), and no one remembers who he is. His very appearance is so unnerving that in-universe every time he tries to talk to the townspeople, he scares them away because they're terrified of him. The only reason he can even manifest enough strength to talk to the player is because they bothered to fix his statue.
Calyrex's storyline isn't just the best part of SWSH's garbage by a mile, he's honest-to-god the best sidequest pokemon has had in fucking years, and I like how GF made sure to take into account that while he might be regal, ancient, and wise, he's so out of touch with modern society that he's confused by the idea of T-Shirt Designs and finds the existence of a seed packet to be a fascinating invention, not to mention having some comedic elements to him like how he invokes his harvesting powers
by doing a fucking tap-dance. He even takes the time to give his thanks to Peony if you show him the legendary when he moves to the cave (though Peony's too dense to realize it and just thinks he's hearing voices).
On paper, and without context, Calyrex is fucking atrocious, and so that was my first impression of him. But after having played it, I have to be honest, I really like him a lot. He's probably the best legendary Gen 8 has period, and I hope game freak makes more story quests like his in the future.
