>>45582904I remember when I first played Gold and Silver, the guy in the steel gym said something about the lines of 'I'm not sure what types are effective against steel, since it was just recently discovered'. I had played Red and Blue up to that point and I had no idea what steel's type matchups were, worse still, the gym didn't have any trainers to practice with and figure out steel's type matchups. The first thing I tried was my Magmar's Fire Punch because of some anime episode when they use Flamethrower to fight a crystal Onix, which I assumed was weak against fire because it was actually a Steel type. It worked, no joke.
>>45582946Maybe, but up until that point you knew what ground's type matchups were, you encounter a lot of them before this gym, unlike Gold and Silver's steel gym. Also, some trainers used non ground pokemon in this gym, like Machoke and Tauros, so you were always unsure what type of pokemon would the leader use... until you see Giovanni's sprite and then you know what you're up against.
