I actually feel like Hop's decision to become a professor made more sense, because he got stomped repeatedly over the course of the game which made him realize he was shit at battling, while Gary proved himself as a competent Trainer so it was kind of weird he just suddenly decided to become a professor.

Gary has a bit, for all of 2 or 3 episodes, where he's the trivia-spouting know it all, totally in keeping with being Oak's grandson. We can guess that per his early party car antics and his having a better grasp of what he's doing that he isn't having all the misadventures Ash is and thus not getting the same thing out of it. But I don't remember that he ever says.
