Let's say hypothetically I wanted to have a complete Gen 7 national dex on my own without trading with anyone. Is this the minimum setup I would need?

Gen 6 has spoofable events that it did for the anniversary. It included all of the mythicals and Gen 6 in its entirety already let you catch every non-mythical.

Gen 6 alone has the first 721 Pokemon available between both sets of games. You don’t need anything earlier than the 3DS games.

No, you'd need Bank which is what would be required anyway to transfer stuff from earlier games.

You're mistaken. Gen 6 is quite literally just a Gen 5 game shoved into 3D. They do many things right that everything after completely missed the mark on. At worst they're criticized for starting the trends that Gen 7+ double and tripled down on.

Alright well this seems like the way to go. Much cheaper and less time consuming than my original idea. I've played and enjoyed all the gens up to 5 but I don't have the physical copies of them any more. Thank you bro

Though bank has a glitch where pokemon that evolve through friendship just won't evolve
