There is no "canon starter" in a franchise that outright confirms the multiverse exists and uses it to handwave inconsistencies across media, and for one that uses the multiverse to make a "what-if" out of protagonists not existing allowing their respective Evil Teams to succeed, then it's not too farfetched for there to be universes where each of the protagonists were the ones to become champion or pick X instead of Y.

Yes? GameFreak and The Pokemon Company have said all Pokemon Media share the same fundamental universe but are set in parallel worlds, and plenty of references to Ash or the anime exist even outside of that Greninja or Hat Pikachu distributions.

His canon starter is Pikachu. The Red we follow in games following Kanto have his team using all three starters with his ace as Pikachu. This doesnt really make sense unless Yellow's protagonist is the one we follow.
