Gachashit bypasses gambling laws because you aren't *directly* using real money, you're exchanging it for virtual currency.

I don't expect this to remain the case for much longer though, gambling mechanics in vidya have come under heavy fire recently.

Depictions of gambling aren't the same as employing game mechanics that are basically gambling. People are scrutinizing loot boxes already, so it's very possible that gacha games and even booster packs for trading card games will face similar scrutiny in time.

Voltorb Flip unironically is pretty good, and I hate they turned the game corner in celeadon into an arcade that isnt playable.

Having arcades in your world not be playable is a failure of game design

The problem isn't gambling, but DEPICTIONS of gambling.
The slot machines in Pokemon don't use real money, can actually be timed with enough skill, and aren't even necessary to get the prizes because you can just buy coins. But they look like slot machines, and that's bad.
Gacha games are literal gambling, but they don't superficially resemble anything you can find in a real casino, so they're fine.

That they're not explicitly aimed at kids (or indeed made directly by Game Freak), instead aiming to monetise adults the way the plastic merch crap is reeling in kid's pocket money hand-over-fist is another reason.
