The starters aren’t TERRIBLY well-tied to the region, but we do have milk snakes (iinspired the starter’s colors) and are big on seafood, hence the lobster. I also had a pet crayfish has a kid. LI was formed by a glacier, so ice age, so mammoths? I just like elephants really.
A lot of the mons are based on animals I fondly remember seeing in the wild as a kid, with some nods to LI sprinkled in (big duck, Jackson Pollock raccoon, Gatsby moth, and monk parakeet to name a few). Some of the nods are too obscure to be widely appreciated... if I ever take a crack at a second region, I’ll pick a more interesting locale.
