It absolutely is though. You can easily avoid being overleveled by not knocking out every wild pokemon you encounter.
The real problem with single player is that the enemy AI is buttfuck retarded and will let you set up and sweep their team without any semblance of pushback. I don't wanna have to waste 20-40 hours slapping around some retards to face actually challenging AI.

Characters in most RPGs usually have unique moves and attributes that distinguish them from each other

Pokemon all mostly function the same, the only difference is visuals and their type

Gimping yourself isn't a challenge. It doesn't make the enemy AI any more intelligent or stronger, it just makes you, the player, weaker. It changes nothing about the difficulty of the game.

Pokemon needs better AI and difficulty options. Shared EXP isn't an issue at all.

being underleveled is definitely more fun than steamrolling everything with the exp. share on, the fact that they didn't care about keep that option for players just shows how much Gamefreak doesn't give a shit, when titles like Bravely Default even gave you the option to turn off exp entirely for people who maybe already played the game, loved it and maybe wanted to do a challenge run of it

People who enjoy games shouldn't have to fight against the developers. And developers shouldn't try to change things that are perfectly fine for years just to railroad players into their crappy "vision." Especially when the games are not even balanced around whatever they changed and you overlevel everything like crazy.

In the newer games you can not fight a single wild pokemon and you still have to skip trainers to not overlevel gyms. It's garbage.

In that case, yes it would be bad to remove them. It would give casual players an easier time and it would give people who want a challenge or a speedrun or whatever to play in their own way. Everyone wins.

Hypotheticals have no place when comparing to objective and observable scenarios though. This isn't philosophy or a moral qualm. It's just objective truth that taking something away from players, which in no way was negative to the game's health and was used by many people, is an entirely negative thing.

Pokemon had those rules and restrictions set in place for 2 decades. The rules were already set. Nothing was wrong with the rules that existed. There needn't be change to those rules for absolutely 0 reason. All it does is remove options for people who want to play in a slightly different way. All it does is make the game worse.

You don't have to take things to an extreme. Pokemon had an EXP share that was an entirely optional item in the game and it was not a sandbox before. Making it mandatory doesn't mean the game is now balanced and everything is in harmony as it should be, it's a stupid fucking change.

The point is that I don't see why you would include options that you have not been keeping in mind while developing the game and in some scenarios might even go against the vision of the game. The main issue is that GF doesn't seem to be able to counter-balance the difficulty, having pokemon not listen too you if they're at a high enough level without the necessary badge is stupid. Outright denying you from catching a too-high level pokemon is retarded.

The way I would like to see it change is that you are able to level up your pokemon super easily, but your max level is capped depending on how many badges you have (lv.25 for one badge, lv.30 for 2, etc.). Enough that you can have a slight level advantage for a gym, but it will encourage you to actually switch out for more advantageous pokemon once in a while.

The issue, at least in cases like mine, is it kills any incentive to switch out. Normally you switch out to give everyone a shot/keep others from getting underleveled, (a larger issue that would be solved by making doubles/triples default, but RPG standards are scary) but when everyone gets a shot by default, there's nothing stopping you from just railroading with your starter like a toddler, even if it faints, you have prepped army waiting on standby.

Most other RPGs have some sort of difficulty options as well. Tales of Berseria lets you increase the difficulty level mid-playthrough. Ys VIII gets really spicy on higher difficulties. DQXI lets you customize your difficulty setting. Does Pokemon Sword and Shield give you difficulty customization?

The biggest and most important difference is those games don't force you to only have one party member out at a time. You're encouraged to play around with team synergy, which is why it helps to keep them all around the same level. This philosophy for Pokemon only really comes into play for online battles, the base game can easily be railroaded just by using your starter, with little inherent incentive to constantly rotate out now that the rest of your party is constantly keeping up.

Anyways, we know all the excuses, yes you can play around the exp share, but it's retarded that we even have to. Making it mandatory is a huge step backwards in terms of QoL. Putting in a toggle that is on by default takes nothing away from everyone else.

This is an argument FOR Experience Share. Having the team be around the same level means you can swap out the starter for other Pokemon without being crippled. Without Experience Share, the team all being the same level is something you have to actively exert effort into, when you could just have your starter soak up all the experience and be so powerful that nothing can deal with it much easier. Experience Share doesn't make it so you never use your other Pokemon, it makes it so your Pokemon are still worth using even if it's not just grinding to keep them in a usable state. It makes the idea of bringing in an experimental Pokemon or a unknown new Pokemon worth it before having to invest a bunch of time and effort. And for a game where a major appeal is customized team building, that's a major boon.

In terms of your starter being overleveled and OP as hell if you didn't use other Pokemon? Yes it totally was. Kids have done that since Gen 1, hell I did that in Pokemon Red with my Venusaur who would get every Rare Candy I ever acquired.

Cycling through the team doesn't overcome a challenge without Experience Share, it just lets you step up to the plate. It's actually harder to keep a balanced team of different Pokemon, or to use your team's different strengths and weaknesses cleverly, when you have to bench what's appropriate for the situation to bring in something objectively weak and unfit just so they get experience. In that case, it's much easier to just pick 1 or 2 favorites and let them soak up an entire team's worth of EXP (especially before Gen 5's exp scaling, when overlevelling had no consequences whatsoever) and steamroll everything in your path. Especially in a game where you're often catching things of very different levels, it's just tedium.

Why did anon's post cause this much seething? He's right to an extent. Masuda is adamant on sabotaging the mainline series so just play the spinoff series instead, or play a difficulty romhack or something.
You must engorge yourself on glue if you're dumb enough to like the Pokemon franchise for what has consistently been the weakest aspect in the franchise as long as the spinoff titles have existed. The mainline games have never been great and hating nu-Pokemon not for the dexcut or the braindead AI, but for not requiring you to grind your reserve team might be the dumbest hill to die on.

The problem with the forced exp share is that they also added the retarded mechanic where the catch rate goes way down if your pokemon is a lower level than the wild pokemon. So you always have to keep one of your main fighters in your party so you can catch new pokemon, and then that pokemon you keep around for catching gets way over leveled because you can't turn off the exp share
