Monsters are by default considered scary, dangerous things and soccer moms might complain, and it hurts marketing. In Japan, the connotation doesn't exist there quite as much. Monsters are just funny little creatures, for the most part. I haven't seen a lot of Japanese media using the word "monster" in a negative way.
tl;dr marketing in the west having to be careful because Americans are pussies and satanic panic didn't help at all
