Yet you do in every game to catch wild Pokemon. Six Pokeballs wouldn't even be able to fit in all your pockets even at the size they are in the anime. And what about people who don't have pockets or belts? There's a shitload of NPCs and anime characters that fall under that category. Where do their Pokeballs go? GF and the anime never put any thought into the concept and neither should you. They just pull them out of a pocket dimension for all it matters.

The anime-style Pokeballs have been canon since the 3DS games, where the "return beam" became an official thing. There's even official art of Pokemon doing that "person holds the Pokeball in their hand and it opens up on its own and the Pokemon zaps to the ground" thing from the anime.

Of course not, yet the option to use Pokeballs is always under the bag option, meaning you pull them out of your bag. Realistically, the turn style combat to begin with doesn't make any sense. That's the point I've been trying to make is you're putting way more thought of functionality and "realism" into a series where realism doesn't apply even on a base level. There's no point in trying to use real life standards on a game series that never had such standards.

You realize that turn-based combat is just an abstraction, right? For every RPG. They aren't literally taking turns, it's just an abstract representation of the actual battle.

Pokemon has no one canon. The games and the anime are equally canon, but non-canon to each other. They just work together to ensure that everything is as consistent between the two as possible.

He's right. If Pokeballs all function differently in the anime, manga, and maybe the games, then there's clearly no hard canon for them. Hell, you could even argue the anime or manga is more canon as far as Pokeballs go, since the original Gameboy games didn't really show how they work (and even they seem to have used the anime's Pokeballs in later games).

The consistency argument is irrelevant, because Pokemon is not one show with multiple seasons. It's marketed that way in the west for some reason, but Japan considers every gen (except Gen 2) as its own separate show. They don't use the season format there. There's also the fact that the audience is constantly replaced.

Everything makes a lot more sense when you see it the way it's intended to be seen; as seven different shows that just happen to star the same character.
