Don't fall for the 3 starter meme, wait a bit and get yourself a Staryu to evolve into Starmie to use as a water type. Surf/Thunderbolt/Ice/Beam/Psychic will shred most of the game and give you tons of coverage so you don't have to worry about catching certain pokemon to fill a hole in your team.
