The only reason not to play pokemon in public is because people will actually try to talk to you about it. Several times I've had people sitting next to try to start conversations about the game im playing. Same thing with certain books

The only Pokemon game I willingly play in public is GO, simply because it's more acceptable to use your phone in public, and because I'm not a faggot who loses all his mental capacity when I encounter a slightly darker Pikachu.

i found my shiny squirtle on leafgreen on the plane.
my jaw was dropping by surprise but that's all, a random girl was sleeping in the seat next to me so i'm glad i didn't had any audible reaction (luckily i'm not the type who screams of surprise).
