Their was no reason for him to lose until the writers change their mind at the last second. Both Ash Sinnoh and Ash XY got cucked hard but Sinnoh Ash has the best growth.

Torterra from his lost of speed to tanking hits. Now I know Torterra is the weakest on his team and got completely cucked but it is still an accomplishment
He made usage of the counter shield which Paul admits was good and use more clever strategy's where he does not always have to power through everything but also realizes that power is needed. Hence why Ash even used some of paul tactics and vice versa.
