What happens to fainted pokemon in the wild? I've heard that the Japanese use the term "near death" instead of fainting.

They just flee, and go somewhere to rest. That's it.

"Near-death" is just a hyperbole for how exhausted they are. They aren't dying or even unconscious, they're just tired and need to rest for a bit before they can fight again.

That's literally what we're told

We know for a fact that Pokemon never die as a result of battle. Battling doesn't hurt them, it just exhausts them.
