What you've got to realize is that the Pokemon consumerbase just wants games that make them feel good but don't make them do uncomfortable things like think. That's why they have difficulty on par with the main games and basically no writing beyond crappy meta jokes.

Also difficulty doesn't matter and shouldn't be a deciding factor in which a game is good or not. If the game's map and story are just lazily recycled from Kanto, you can bet your ass it's worse than Reborn. At least there it actually feels like an actual game.

I judge a fangame by everything, story, presentation, pokémon or fakemon if it has them, and a new story and region. The latter part definitely, I don't consider difficulty hacks to be true fangames. Difficulty should just be a natural thing when designing a game and slightly tweaked at the end. Only autistic gamedevs center their fangame around purely difficulty.

Why not just incorporate mons from gens 1-3 and mix them around? That's plenty enough, I think it's just a smokescreen to actually muddy the gameplay and skimp on content that can be included in the romhack.
By adding more pokemons they can cut more corners and half-bake new content.

hacks are already very limited in the content they can add, so the best thing they can do easily is either increase the difficulty or add in newer mons, add in fairy type, split, etc.

You say that because the smokescreen that is the added pokemons cloud you. There are a lot of things that can be done in a romhack, new questlines, new region, new locations, and postgame.

give unbound a try, it has a bunch of cool things including the things you've mentioned

to give you my point of view, I prefer a hack like RR to Unbound any day. I appreciate the effort put into making new locations, region, new storylines etc. however, at the end of the day i would rather play something that is proven to work, and RR does an amazing job bringing kanto/firered to it's upmost potential currently possible. It's the same reason i prefer megaman games over other platformers, and pokemon over most other RPGs; with both series, every new installment is an attempt at perfecting the existing concept which i am already familiar with. Depends on what you want out of a game, i suppose.

Hey guys.
Recently started playing Radical Red. While I like a lot of the changes, I do find some things to be not to my taste.
Is there a mod or purest version for RR that:
- Removes the balance changes
and/or
- Removes the mandatory Smogon rules

No, there aren't.
Also the entire game is balanced around those changes and rules, altering them would just create an unbalanced mess. If you feel it's so unfair and are too lazy to farm just fire up pokehex to pump up your pokemon IVs and set your EVs comfortably.

The other day I was farming Clefairy for Moon Stones and one put my lead to sleep. I switched out and Clef used Sing on that one too, but the game prevented the wild Clefairy from putting it to sleep cause "smogon rules." I laughed for about a minute.

It just depends on what game you're playing. I don't what Psychic Adventures alters but PKHex only likes it when you give it 'clean' roms so if you feed it something that makes a lot of 'illegal' changes it might reject it.
Alternatively, do you use something like RetroArch? AFAIK it only likes .sav files and will not use .srm files, so you'll need to convert it

I don't think the smogon rules hurt, I quite like them, but what I don't like is the balance changes. I really hate fakemon and making brand new abilities, changing abilities, buffing/nerfing over 800+ pokemon all left up to this 1 guy, etc just feels like fakemon shit. I still prefer it to fakemon, but it feels so bad. I wish they were all just Vanilla mon with their Gen 8 stats/abilities/movepools. Even if that means a lot of pokemon end up being shit, I think it's better than making a bunch of fake abilities and leaving balance up to some random guy online.

Prettty new to hacks but i like blazing emerald so far. Im also running it at 5x speed so maybe that helps. Mon selection is superior to the original by far. Second gym leader was cringe tho. Also thought it was weird that my tyrogue evolved at 10 and without even attack and defense, still got hitmontop.

Currently in Nasca town in Insurgence, trying to move mons around since fire types screw most of my team. I've replaced my Rapidash with Demisra and now I'm thinking of replacing Uto for the Empoleon I've got boxed since the water type I wanted to use (Delta Snivy) is apparently way later into the game.

That being said, yeah I agree it dilutes the identity of the game. I can understand later gen evos like Gliscor in Gen 2 but beyond that is too much and makes the game a bit annoying to play because it's difficult to find the mons you want, though this will be less of an issue when more romhacks add in DexNav

Nah, Ame, the creator themselves is genuinely beyond redemption. I don't know how much I buy into the 'Reborn is based off IRL people' thing (mostly because it's ridiculously outlandish/zero public records exist for some of the wilder shit like Dr. Electrorape actually practicing ECT) but the fact that Ame claimed the events of the game were based off real suicides and deaths means they're either a fucking sociopath or chose to be dishonest on some super fucked up shit.

chimchar can also blow out of control thanks to flare blitz and cc, torchic ends up being better but its learnset is shit so it stays bad for a decent period of time.
both litten and rowlet are pretty alright, incineroar is probably one of the stronger starters thanks to good moves and intimidate.

oops spedread that, there aren't very many good ones early on.
there's a couple things with random chance involved that can allow you to get good water types, there's the water type egg that can be. clauncher/clamperl/seel/spheal/remoraid/frillish
and then there's the mystery mystery egg which can turn into about 20 different things but can be tentacool/staryu/azurill/areanie.
after these you gain access to stuff like corphish and carvanha for offense, and the tympole, wooper, and shellos lines for defensive.
these are all available from the 2nd-5th gym and you get infinitely more options after that.

Here's a list of all certain typed Pokemon you can get at each stage of the game. Good water types include the Onyx egg, Barbaracle/Crawdaunt as mentioned above, Gastrodon, etc.

Unless you're really invested in Aelita and Keta's side story as a whole for some reason, it's not super worth it, the game fills in most of the blanks if you didn't decide to play it.
Upon beating it you get a code for the main game which if you go to the receptionist in Grand Dream City's help center (the huge building in the upper main plaza) during the day you get a free Riolu. Said code is 489234.

I know that when people see a game is incomplete, it's a big turnoff for playing it.
How do people feel about a game that's complete, but is only a bite-sized portion of a game?

Something like a game that's complete from start to finish, but starts at maybe Lv40 and ends at Lv50. One gym, one major dungeon, maybe a rival battle or two, and the associated routes and caves. You can start off with maybe one full box of Pokemon in your PC, and obviously you can catch more in the areas you explore, but really the game is just one small section of what would normally be a full-length adventure.
Would something like that catch people's interest, or are they only interested in games where they can go from Lv5 slapfights to Lv80 champion battles (plus postgame)?

I feel like Reborn's plot could be salvaged with only a few changes. Like remove the suicide, most of the gym leaders being complete wrecks (hell, remove all the gym leaders between the city and the circus because they are all terrible), and a few other things (like the volcano scene) and you have a decently workable plotline.
I mean it's about fighting for control over a city against a bunch of people who are trying to actively dry out everyone they can to pull a 'back to nature/how it started', there is plenty of potential there. Kind of a you vs. the rot that everyone else didn't notice because they were too close, shit it could be half mystery as you track down the people responsible and find how far they reach.

Unfortunately many of the drivers for the plot are due to the gym leaders' ineptitude and mental instability.
I think there's a way to make Reborn work, and the overlying villain plot isn't terribly far off from what you'd see in a regular Pokemon game (it's basically Team Galactic with more steps and fluff) but the actual story itself would have to change drastically, somehow.

Except most romhacks introduce more than just the bog standard 100-150 pokemon than their original games. Rad Red has all generations of Pokemon and if you can't find a decent team that you haven't used before with almost 900 pokemon at your disposal then you've got brain problems. Also shittermon aren't that bad, you can beat most pokemon games with shittermon, you can beat most romhacks with shittermon.

Rad Red is also a pretty decently difficult difficulty hack and I'd need to be incentivized to use shit that's not starter/Gyarados/pseudos. Could be doable, the enemies are more limited by Gen 2's limited mechanics/movesets than you are, so bosses tend to all run the same moves (some variant of ice beam/thunderbolt/earthquake/rockslide plus whatever STAB they have on literally everything in the game). The Routes are redesigned to be one-way gauntlets, so you can't go back to heal once you've started. Make sure to stock up on items.

The Routes are more forgiving but the trainers are way harder. The Magma/Aqua bases especially are brutal. There are extra grass patches around to get more catches for Nuzlockes but it's still gonna be hard

It's funny, because they explicitly draw attention to the fact the character wants any Pokemon they catch to be sent to your box and this is prevented with all the other 'play as NPC' sections with you being unable to access grass.
My guess is they realized this happened in Version 11 when this first happened, and then decided to not fix it in Version 12 if anybody wanted to take advantage of it

I don't remember how far I got exactly (like 6-7 gyms iirc), but it's pretty much constant bullshit.

It's basically a never-ending boss-rush of about a dozen different OC rivals, villain team admins and Gym Leaders. And past a certain point the enemy has unlimited Full Restores.

Yeah, it'd be beyond broken if you could do it as Melia since her team is arguably even better (Crest Meganium is absolutely bonkers in doubles, and you are about to face off against a relatively hard doubles fight right after), plus a Life Orb Hydreigon.
The best you get from the character you can do it as is a Protean Greninja and maybe his Silvally if we ever get its Crest.

I really wish there were a romhack with difficulty on par with Clover/Radical Red but forced all wild pokemon to have perfect IVs. Getting 31IV mons is such a grind and when you do the game goes from very hard to normal difficulty since now you can use strategies besides bulky offense, stall, and tanks

Try to get the focus sash in the dojo
You are lacking a normal wall, Aegislash really helps in that fight.
Beedrill is 100% useless in that fight, you might want to keep staraptor just for it, it's not like you can't swap him in back once you drop him from a boss fight.

Erika is the first real hurdle if you have no good grass answers, she's still a joke as long as you have good birds/poison types.
Giovanni is where the difficulty ramps up, and doesn't let up until the eighth gym.
By victory road you'll have so many tools that even the ubers E4 pull out can't match you anymore, but they still wipe the floor with your ass if you make a single mistake.

On the BaseStats documentation it lists that the sizes ARE in game, and that XL pumpkaboos all have miracle seeds on them (like the vanilla games), but I've been dexnaving the only route they are on for hours with frisk and haven't seen a single miracle seed. That's what happens when the tools to make something improve so much and become much more usable to the average user.
Honestly, the best thing to do is to just jump into the most popular ones just to see what you like/don't like to see in your game. After that it becomes much easier to search and play a hack you may like.
For starting out, you might want to play complete games that had tons of work behind, like Clover, Polished Crystal, Gaia, Prism.
You can also try out some "classics" that blew everyone's mind back in the day, like Light Platinum, Flora Sky and Vega. They will feel dated, once you try out more stuff.
Radical Red is talked a lot because is the first hack that put so many QoL improvements in it while also including all pokemons from gen 1 to 8 (last DLCs excluded, for now), but it's much more focused on hard bosses and "competitive" team building than other games, so it may not be a good starting point.
tl/dr just pick one and fucking play nerd.
