Bug's only useful SE is Grass, or specifically Psychic/Dark.
Dragon only hitting Dragon, and hitting literally everything but the two things Dragons prepare for is more useful then Bug hitting Grass, a specific obnoxious dual type, and two irrelevant types, but being resisted by fucking everything. Luckily for Bug, and unluckily for Grass and Psychic/Dark types, you don't run U-Turn for that smashing coverage.

Yes. Dragonite is better than Butterfree, but that's not because of its typing, but because of basically everything else.
I'm not sure if I'd agree with OP saying Bug is better than Dragon offensively, but I will say that Dragon's strength is overrated.

Bug hitting three types super-effectively doesn't matter if it's literally resisted by a third of all types.

Dragon has only ever been super-effective against itself; yet it basically broke DPP meta game with Outrage and Draco Meteor because only steel type resisted it. That's why fairy was needed, but even now Dragon is still better offensively.

Having far less resistances > Hitting 2 more types super-effectively.

It hits literally every thing except Steel for neutral damage. STAB neutral attacks often deal more damage than non-STAB super-effective ones. And even Steel is shaky because nearly every Dragon learns a Fire attack because dragons and fire go hand in hand.

It was both. High BP moves that the majority of the game for neutral damage. The types that "countered" it failed to do because they were both weak to Fire.

Dragon is a very good offensive neutral typing, yes you're not hitting for se almost anything, but you can be sure you'll be unrestisted. Why do you think that before fairies people would run Outrage so much that move would be considered a braindead win button?

I think you could have had an argument if they hadn't made Fairy resist Bug.

Bug was already barely a decent type, and they gave it another disadvantage when there was just as much reason to make Bug super effective vs Fairy. (I'm not saying it should have necessarily, but it could have been without seeming too weird. Before you jump on me remember that Ice magic is strong against Fire monsters in most RPGs)

We were robbed of Bug as a good type.
