Pokemon centered around a theme, like the second gym in uranium being centered around cave pokemon. It was a nice change of pace honestly, and sticking to typed gyms is kinda stupid for a fangame since you can assume that your players already know the type matchups.

The problem with this is that there's usually not enough pokemon to fit a theme, and when they do, they all end up being similarly typed anyway.

this is a perfect balance though, themes that tend towards but are not entirely one type. infinitely preferable to the 100th version of spamming a water type move at the first rock gym that features 2 rock pokemon from the first cave

I mean even with Gyms in the newer games they have SOME things that don't allow you to just sweep with one pokemon. For instance, Gordie starts with Barbaracle which resists Water partly. Then goes into Shuckle which resists Grass, Ground, and Fighting with its bug type. Stonjourner is pure rock type but he ends with Coalossal that resists grass, so there's still some resistance to his weaknesses.
