How did "too much water" become such a big meme when it's a legitimate complaint?
>slow movement compared to land
>always chance of random encounter
>have to load up your pokemon with multiple HMs

1. Bad/unspecific phrasing. They could've said "too many water levels" and it would've been fine, but "too much water" just sounds silly.
2. IGN has a reputation for being retarded and unreliable. The fact that they'd lower the score for such a petty thing while giving far worse games higher scores is a reason to laugh at them.
3. The game has an evil team who wants to remove water from the world, so it's easy to draw funny parallels.

Because it's a much more valid complaint in the originals than in the remakes, which have much higher water speed and lower encounter rates, plus reusable TMs mean deleting the HM when you no longer need it is an even better option

Hoennbabies dominate the internet now. It's definitely a valid complaint. Even if HMs weren't an issue the water routes are still bland visually because it's just...water. It'd be better if they were spread out but it's backloaded towards the end of the game.

but too much water was already established as a meme long before ORAS and you can't please they hacks, they had to include it in the review so they don't lose the credibility they already don't have as game reviewers.

most of the water shit is optional, if someone doesn't like it they can skip directly to finishing the Kyogre/Groudon story and going to beat the league

Why does a region that's 30% water travel all its water tiles faster than D/P travels all of its water tiles? I forget if Platinum actually catches up or not.
Do not forget who wrote this review, though. She is a legit plague and downright repulsive person.

Because out of context it sounds silly. "Too much water" doesn't describe any of the problems associated with the water on its own, so anyone just looking at the short TL:DR of the review is going to be fucking bewildered at the statement. The whole short bulletpoint thing is stupid any way, "Some smart updates" sounds just as dumb as too much water

Not really, at worst they were tedious because of the trainers. Which isn't a game design flaw, it's a problem with Pokemon's slow as fuck battle flow issue when a game on the Wii did it better in 2007 and they still haven't adapted.

That was only a small part of it, it was more about the late game water routes being very samey in terms of pokémon you will battle, both in the wild and against trainers.
Then add a water gym on top in the same area, and add in Team Aqua in AS for even more water mons to regularly beat.

This 100%. The complaints are valid if you read the review, but bad phrasing combined with a bad reputation was all that was needed.
Shame, because ORAS is definitely nothing more than a 7.8 at best, and IGN was right in giving the game a lower score than most other big reviewers.

That's a problem with almost all jrpgs, Pokemon especially:

Cope, you still have locations splitbetween the waters like Shoal Cave, Sootopolis, Seafloor Cavern, Sky Pillar and the route where you wake up the regis
