this is something I noticed but haven't really been able to put in words with Pokemon.
Ever since Gen 7 it feels like Pokemon went from being about exploration to just being about narrative. Take this excerpt from a video about metroid at 11:02.
Why is it that both of the series fell into the same pit? Why is it so hard for the producers to get out of it?
He mentions how the only party that seems to have trouble with knowing what Metroid is supposed to be is Nintendo, and lately it feels like a lot of that sentiment is also shared with Pokemon. While kids gravitate towards more open ended, simplistic/social games like Fortnite or Among Us, Pokemon goes in the opposite direction with narrative-heavy, checkpoint based progression and little emphasis on multiplayer when games in the past like Gen 6 nailed that aspect perfectly.
