This. GameFreak's biggest mistake will always be trying to throw Johto's version of Kanto in the shitter.
It's so tiring when every time Kanto is referenced it's always the outdated, tired, old shit from the original RBY. The closest we've gotten to a "true" Kanto remake is LGPE which is fucking hilarious.

Except it doesn't feel like nuPokemon. At all.
Especially with no physical/special split. FRLG is the last comfy Pokemon other than Emerald.

FRLG is fine for what it is, can’t really make Kanto better than that without deviating from the original vision. And to be honest, Kanto is really a rather bland region at the end of the day, and this comes from RBY boomer.

Because true Kanto references are kino, unfortunately GameFreak has no clue what that actually is and instead banks on the same shitty Professor Oak, Charizard, Nugget Bridge, le evil Giovanni, muh 151 references instead of shit that actually embodies Kanto.
Stuff like the four boys on a railroad reference? Great. Welcome, even. Giving Archer a presence in LGPE to further flesh out stuff we KNOW OG Kanto had but was never shown before? Holy shit I cum.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with referencing Kanto, but as with literally any reference in media it should be done correctly. Pokemon is the only media outlet that gets away with squandering this. Not even Ready Player One was as hamfisted as Post-SM Pokemon is.
