when i was a kid i thought azurill and azumarill were both released in gen iii, cause marill is common as shit in rse but it's hidden in gsc and there's only a single, optional trainer with an azumarill in the whole game (I looked that up later)

i knew about marill in gsc cause it was always in the anime but i associated azumarill with rse

weirdly next generation they would release budew and roserade in the same gen, mimicking what i thought happened in gen iii to marill

Because as Obi-Wan said - it's correct, from a certain point of view. Sugi, after finishing his work on Gen II, moved onto Gen III conceptual work. Gen II hadn't finished by that stage however and Masuda came along with the rehash and they put Celebi in, but Sugi was off that project, hence his above quote.
But of course zoomers have no concept of this, thus assume they know it all without context.
