There's a reason why Bulbasaur was the first Kanto starter Ash caught in the anime. They wanted the fan favorite on the team first.

None of the 3 kanto starters are really unpopular. It was probably the least popular of the 3 overall though.
I don't think it was hated, I just think that most people at the time (including myself) thought it was the worst strength wise because grass matches poorly into the common bug/poison/flying. It was only with later analysis that it was found to be pretty decent because of the gym matchups.

Yeah, that's my point. Its great against the gyms overall. But some people, myself included, overlooked that the first time playing RBY because of its matchup against wild pokemon and team rocket is worse in general.
Which is how the fallacy of "bulbasaur line sucks" became a thing.

Bulbasaur is iconic as fuck, you're thinking of Venufags.
No one cared about the fatass frog compared to Charizard and Blastoise, and they received endless mockery when Ash's Bulbasaur refused to evolve and had nothing special going for it beyond "muh solar beam," where at least Squirtle had its iconic shades.
