HMs themselves were great as roadblocks or as excuses to revisit old routes. It was the execution that was terrible. HMs should be handled the way they are on romhacks like Unbound. If you have the HM and a Pokémon that can learn it then you can use the move.

Thing is, people here confuse tedium with an actual challenge. There's a difference between something being genuinely hard, something that needs your concentration, your skills, something that feels rewarding to solve/pull off, versus something that's just artificial difficulty, where you know exactly what you have to do and how, but the game made it in such a way that you have to go through hundreds of unnecessary steps that amount to nothing in order to overcome it. They don't challenge you, they don't entertain you, they don't make you think or try to be better, they just bore you. That's not good game design in the slightest, but for some reason people here refuse to admit that.

More like having a HM slave you teach every HM that isn't surf/waterfall, forcing you to bench one of your bros each time you need to go through a cave/whatever.

It's dogshit but I don't think this is really exclusive to Sinnoh. I have to do this on all generations prior 6 or 7 or whenever they changed them.

It's not a huge inconvenience, but it doesn't feel particularly good to bench one of your Pokemon you caught, raised and battled with many times for some shitmon you don't care about outside of HMs. Either you do that or you settle with having only 5 bros instead of 6.

I still love Sinnoh and gen 4 in general. I don't even think this HM problem is exclusive to it. HMs are a mistake and wish they fixed them in like gen 2.

There's no objectivity here. "It's comfy" doesn't negate criticisms, and is merely a comment on aesthetics, but just because you find something frustrating doesn't mean everyone else does.

All of that aside, even if a game has problems, ultimately whether it's good or not is subjective based on your own enjoyment of it. So like, Gen 6 might have a lot of problems, but if you like it anyway, what does it matter?

Man, oh man, it's like you can't read. Again, no one said you can't enjoy it, it's just being baffled at people excusing bad shit because "it's comfy".
