Legendaries are a good balance because you still have to fight them, so it shows they're not willing to omit the battle system completely.
There's also plenty of soulful references. Most of the map aesthetic is based on the HGSS designs of the maps. Because the originals and FRLG were all really bland and samey. The wild Pokemon distribution is also fixed to be a little more like Kalos where each route has something new to encounter instead of spamming Rattata and Pidgey.
Along with that, Pokemon riding, and the removal of HMs being done correctly for the first time ever, it's a very soulful game stuck in a shitty rehash.

This is the only thing that brings me to the seething rage everyone else has about the game. Alola forms don't even begin to cut it and if anything it makes me feel gipped that they seem to have made regional forms as a gimmick just to get away with this game at first.
