For me all they need to do is have multiple regions again. I think 2 or 3 is the right number. 4 is overkill because of how high your levels are by then, after playing some rom hacks. 2 with multiple bonus areas is probably the best balance. I care about exploring and discovery the most.

Gen 4 = ok, the classical direction is becoming stagnant, since Platinum and HG/SS (even though they're better than DP) something is changing

Gen 5 = good

Gen 6 = bad, from here GF took out the good things of the new direction

Gen 7 = meh (SM ok, the others are bad)

Gen 8 = very bad
