This is the first game I ever owned. Got it for my Christmas 2004. Helped teach me how to read. Played through it countless times. Know it like the back of my hand.

With all that being said, they are flawed games. Sevii Islands are lacking. No time events. The aforementioned Golbat not being able to evolve until post-game. Overall, I would say that they are good games and the best way to play Kanto exclusively, but they are still flawed games.

The only thing LGPE has over it is better graphics which is a given for a game released over a decade later. The originals have nothing over FRLG

Oak literally pauses your first rival battle to tell you how Pokemon battles work and the catching tutorial is forced while it was optional in the originals.

HMs aren’t that plentiful in Kanto so it’s nothing crazy.
Even if these were advantages, FRLG has more going for it

Had they included a Johto postgame and put more effort into aesthetic detail (cutting animations after Crystal was just lazy) they would have gone from 8.5 to 9.5 games

They cut animations because on GBA you can't manually map sprites tile by tile unlike BG tilemaps.

FireRed and LeafGreen were fine but replaying them makes it painfully obvious that Kanto's worldbuilding lacks compared to other regions in the modern day.
That being said, I fucking love the Sevii Islands and wish there was a game based only in them. There's a surprising amount of lore and intrigue surrounding the area and I love it all so much.
